Eataly: è in arrivo!

I walked by Eataly today, to find some exciting new developments. This sign confirmed that the mega-market will in fact be open on August 31 at 4pm. No backing out now, Batali, the signs are up! Why open in the late afternoon, you ask? Well, because it is after siesta, of course.

The market had its doors closed (although I could see Bastianich and Batali locked in an intense game of bacci ball through the windows), but the wine shop had it'd doors open and the shelves were being stocked.

And, mamma mia, was this place an Italian wino's wildest dream! I only had about 30 seconds before my crafty disguise was discovered and I was shown the door, but I managed to snap these pictures of the activity in the wine shop.

I might as well just quit my job now and check into rehab if this place is around the corner. WOW. I sincerely hope that if I am a very good person in life, this is the kind of place I will end up when I die. With FloFab and Bruni, of course. No Batali. Bastianich can come if he brings his mother.

Tantalizing developments. They have an awning, people!

My little heart skipped a beat when I stepped inside and saw this. The store is divided into microregions of Italy, with helpful maps labeled with each area's typical wines and varietals. And... it's all Italian... swoon... Good call Eataly-- we don't need none of that $8.99 South African Sauvignon Blanc, do we! I wonder if I could recreate this place in miniature in my closet.

This is classic. A Serious Eats post on Eataly says: "Mario Batali recently described his imported food hall Eataly as a "temple," as a place where 'food is more sacred than commerce.'"

...Except that...it is a store. Where you can buy really, really, really expensive food.
