Be Mine

This weekend is Valentine's day, and it has got me in the mood to make sweet things to give away (and selfishly, that make my apartment smell heavenly). My parents will be in town, which is kind of the anti-Valentine's Day plans, I guess. But in any case, it is an excuse to cook for people who come over to my house.

I was thinking of making some light appetizers for Friday night, such as these spiced nuts, maybe a little bruschetta, etc. For some reason I haven't been able to stop fantasizing about hen of the woods mushrooms lately. I think I even had a dream about them (I realize that this is a weird food fantasy to have. What can I say? they are dark and mysterious, and sexy in a gnarly way). Maybe just sauteed hen of the woods served with parmesean shavings. Mmmmmm...

But what I am really excited about is making this olive oil and lemon cake to eat after we run the valentine's day 5k race on sunday. How good does that look with jam and clotted cream? Who says you need chocolate on Valentine's Day?
